Beginner Photography Lessons (4 Pack)

Private Photography Lessons in Denver Colorado

These personalized classes are designed to take you from a complete beginner in photography, to someone with a firm grasp of basic photographic techniques.  The rules of photography are the same no matter what subjects you are photographing; however, by focusing your learning experience on specific subjects which interest you we can enhance your retention and your ability to understand the material.

How it works:

  • Each class will be held in a different location which best suites the class topic. (All classes will be held in the Denver Metro area).
  • Your first class introduces you to important basic concepts which you will build on in subsequent classes.
  • Classes #2 & #3 give you the chance to work with an instructor in the field, actually putting your new skills to work.
  • The last class is devoted to post production and will show you how PP software can enhance, alter and manipulate your images.
  • Each class will include an "at home" project/exercises which will be submitted and reviewed to help improve your techniques.
    • Have a question while your working on your project?  Just grab your cell phone and call me.  I'll help you even when we're not in class.
  • Classes schedule is very flexible.
    • Your class day each week can vary if you like. (ie: Class 1: Monday, Class 2 Thursday, etc)
    • It's best to schedule all four classes upon signup (as available dates will be first come first server)
    • It's recommended that you complete your classes within one month so that too much time does not pass between classes.
    • Class time is 2-3 hours dependent on location and topic.

Beginner Photography Lessons | Denver

Class 1:

  • Time to Learn the Basics:

    • Like anything else in life, before the fun starts we need to learn the basics.  In photography that means learning some concepts about how your camera and lens work when you bring the outside world onto your film (or sensor).  And then there's all those buttons and menus…. What does it all do?

    • Photography Concepts:

      • Composition
      • Aperture and depth of field
      • Shutter speed and motion
      • ISO and image clarity
      • Achieving proper exposure
    • Basic Camera Settings:

      • M, A, S, P – what are they for?
      • Presets
      • Working with your menus

Class 2:(in the field)

  • Take it to the streets:

    • The previous week you will have learned a great deal of information.  And if you're like most people, you will have forgotten a great deal of it.  Even if you have an iron trap memory, you will still have problems applying all those concepts to 'real world' photographic situations.  In class two we "hit the streets", or the zoo, or the train yard or the mountains…  (depends on your interests and the weather).

    • The main purpose of class two is to have an instructor with you while you are attempting to capture images.   In this way you get to have somebody with you to answer questions, to mentor new concepts and most importantly to solidify all the technical stuff learned the previous week, into something that makes sense when you are actually shooting photos.

Class 3:(in the field)

  • Getting Creative:

    • By now, you will have a pretty good grasp of how to work your camera and the basic concepts used in photography.  However, as we all know, photography is an art more than a science and with that in mind, class three focuses on getting you to  "see" in a new way.

    • Again we will head out to photograph, but unlike the previous class we will not be focused on the technical (in fact we may not be focused at all… ) , we will explore how to look at the same object in different ways to unlock your inner artist.

Class 4:

  • Post Production Skills:

    • While great photography starts with you and your camera, often it is what happens in the dark room (or in today's world… on the computer) which can bring your full creative vision to life.  So no beginner class is complete without at least getting your feet wet with some post production software training.
      • Improving exposure, lighting, contrast and colors.
      • Cropping and alignment.
      • Working with compression
      • Resizing and exporting.
    • The topics we cover here will vary greatly depending on what you already know how to do and what software you have access to.  If you already have basic skills with imaging programs, then I'll show you more advanced image techniques like portrait retouching, HDR or texturing.
