Big Moose Encounter

Bull Moose at Long Lake Colorado

Today while teaching a camera class near Indian Peaks (at Long Lake) a HUGE moose came out of the brush about 40 ft from us…
I was freaking out trying to get my camera settings for the shot (since they were all set for slow shutter landscape shot)_……
By the time I got things right,,  the moose had walked right into the water in front of us (about 20 ft)…  If he had not liked us there we would have had a real problem….. No getting away from a monster like him when he's that close.
He was HUGE.

Most definitely standing taller than myself  (I'm 6 ft).  I'd say 7ft at his ears.

Finally was able to capture one lousy shot that was in focus from maybe 30 ft, before he wandered across the water away from me…  I shot tons more photos,, but the light was totally wrong ,, he was in the shadows facing away from me most of the time.  I managed one more shot from a long distance that's ok, though he's still facing away from me.

So wish my camera had been freehand and ready for action.  Instead of being on a tripod set for slow exposures. I lost the best shots just trying to wrestle the camera off the tripod mount.

Oh well,, it was still a very cool experience…..

It was pretty amazing.  He was an incredibly beautiful creature.  As hard as it was to get up that early in the morning.  it was definitely worth it.   :)
